Installation of Stacked Stone Panels in the Exterior of Buildings

MSI Natural Stacked Stone panels are natural stone pieces adhered to each other and formed into a stepped panel for easier site installation. Each panel weighs between 7–10 lbs. and meets the definition of Adhered Masonry Veneer as defined by the International Building Code. Therefore, no ICC-ES report is available. Natural Stacked Stone panels should be installed in accordance with generally accepted installation practices of natural stone veneers which can be found in the following documents:

  1. International Building Code – Adhered Masonry Veneers are covered in Chapter 14
  2. Building Stone Institute’s Adhered Stone Veneer Installation guide found at buildingstoneinstitute.org.
  3. TCNA Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation – Natural Stone Tile Installation Methods: Exterior Walls
In addition to the above installation guidelines MSI requires the following:
  • A water-resistive barrier must be appropriately installed with penetration and junction flashing in accordance with local building code requirements. MSI will assume no responsibility for water infiltration.
  • Appropriate Substrates: Install panels over a scratch coat as described in the BSI Adhered Natural Stone Installation Guide. If a cementitious backer unit (CBU) is used as the substrate, refer to the CBU manufacturer’s installation instructions to determine suitability, fastening and seam preparation requirements.
  • Mortars: Prepackaged mortars meeting or exceeding the requirements of ANSI A118.15 such as CUSTOM Building Products’ Pro-Lite.
All panels must be back-buttered prior to setting to ensure complete coverage.
  • Sealers: For best performance, natural stones should be sealed using a penetrating sealer such as Miracle’s 511 Impregnator.
